Recebeu formação em teoria da música e violino pela Esmae,(Bacharelato, 1992), Northwestern University, (M.M., 1996), e University of Chicago (Ph.D., 2006). Estudou violino com A. Gaio-Lima e Gerardo Ribeiro e análise e teoria da música com Miguel Ribeiro-Pereira, Candace Brower e Richard Cohn. Actualmente é Assistant Professor de teoria da música (tenure track) na University of Iowa, depois de funções docentes em Lake Forest College, University of Chicago, e Esart (Castelo Branco).

Apresentou trabalho em conferências e universidades incluindo a Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Midwest, Music Theory Society of New York State, Dublin International Conference of Music Analysis, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Symposium on Bartók’s String Quartets-Indiana University, University of Cincinnati, University of Washington, Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Esmae, e Uniwersytet Jagiellonski. Tem publicações na Revista Portuguesa de Musicologia e Theory and Practice.

Em 2004 foi galardoado com os prémios Arthur J. Komar Award (Music Theory Midwest), e Patricia Carpenter Emerging Scholar Award (Music Theory Society of New York State). Foi também fellow no International Orpheus Academy for Music Theory (Ghent, 2003), John Clough Memorial Symposium (University of Chicago, 2005) e no Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music Theory (Yale University, 2006).
