Conjugacy classes in quasiperiodic dynamics and renormalization

Speaker:

João Lopes Dias (ISEG - UTL)

Date:

Monday, 10 September, 2007 - 14:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

We construct a renormalization scheme based on multidimensional continued fractions in
order to describe conjugacy classes of quasiperiodic dynamics close to integrable. We
will be looking mainly at skew-product flows, Hamiltonian systems and toroidal flows.

Automatic topological-combinatorial analysis of global dynamics

Speaker:

Paweł Pilarczyk (Kyoto University, Japan)

Date:

Friday, 12 October, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

In this talk we introduce an algorithmic method for the analysis of the global structure of dynamics in a dynamical system generated by a continuous map in R^n. The recurrent dynamics is captured in a Conley-Morse decomposition, leaving gradient-like dynamics in the remainder of the phase space....

Estabilidade combinatória de sistemas não-determinísticos

Speaker:

Joana Torres (Universidade do Minho)

Date:

Friday, 6 July, 2007 - 14:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.04 - Edifício das Matemáticas

Serão introduzidos e estudados, de um ponto de vista combinatório-topológico, alguns semigrupos de sistemas dinâmicos não-determinísticos contínuos. A estabilidade combinatória, i.e. a persistência da combinatória dos atractores, será caracterizada e a sua generecidade será estabelecida. Algumas...

Fenómenos de degenerescência em optimização dinâmica

Speaker:

Fernando Fontes (Dept. de Matemática para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Universidade do Minho)

Date:

Friday, 15 June, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

Os fenómenos de degenerescência e as condições necessárias de optimalidade capazes de os evitar são um tema clássico e bem estudado no caso de problemas de programação matemática.

Absolutely continuous invariant probabilities (acips) for interval maps without growth conditions

Speaker:

Henk Bruin (University of Surrey, UK)

Date:

Wednesday, 4 July, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.04 - Edifício das Matemáticas

The existence of acips for interval maps with critical points is usually related to the growth-rate of derivatives along the critical orbits. Recent results by Bruin, Shen and van Strien show that no growth is actually needed for unimodal maps, and more recently a new proof (with Rivera-Letelier)...

Dynamics of Bianchi I elastic spacetimes

Speaker:

Simone Calogero (Universidade do Minho)

Date:

Friday, 1 June, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

Understanding the asymptotic dynamics of the Universe is one of the main goals of theoretical cosmology. In the context of homogeneous cosmological models, where the Einstein equations of general relativity reduce to a system of ordinary differential equations, our knowledge on this problem has...

Nonstationary hyperbolic dynamics on the torus

Speaker:

Albert Fisher (Universidade de São Paulo)

Date:

Friday, 25 May, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

Usually in dynamics one studies iterates of a single map, but it turns out that many results go through for sequences of maps. Here we study a specific example:we extend a theorem on Anosov toral automorphisms found independently by Adler and Manning to hyperbolic sequences of maps: assuming the...

Billiards, optimal mass transport and problems of optimal aerodynamic resistance

Speaker:

Alexander Plakhov (University of Aveiro)

Date:

Friday, 4 May, 2007 - 13:30

Venue:

Anfiteatro 0.05 - Edifício das Matemáticas

A body moves through a medium consisting of point particles. The medium is very rare, so that the mutual interaction of the particles is neglected. Interaction of the particles with the body is absolutely elastic. We consider the following problem: find the body, from a given class of bodies,...
