Equilibrium states for dynamical systems I: the uniformly hyperbolic case

I will motivate, define and show how to construct equilibrium states/measures for dynamical systems. Initially this will be done in the context of finite Markov shifts, which can be used to model hyperbolic dynamical systems. I will describe how these measures fit into the general theory of thermodynamic formalism.
