Jorge Almeida's Annual Report

Jorge Almeida's Annual Report

Year:

2014

Brief description of the research activities:

Pursued the development of the theory of finite semigroups through a
profinite approach, together with its applications in computer
science. The following deserve special mention: synchronization of
automata via Wedderburn-Artin theory, which leads to notions of simple
and semisimple automata (joint work with E. Rodaro); conclusion of
work on a profinite proof of the correction McCammond's normal form
algorithm for free aperiodic semigroups (with J. C. Costa and M.
Zeitoun); geometric interpretation of the profinite group of a
minimal subshift as a profiite homotopy group (with A. Costa).
