We survey some of the variational techniques used in the study of nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. We start with a discussion about the spectrum of the Dirichlet p-Laplacian. Then we present some basic abstract minimax principles on the existence and the multiplicity of critical points for a $C^1$ functional. Finally the above results are used in the study of nonlinear elliptic equations.
