International workshop on Non-associative algebras in Porto 2019

1. Porto Historic Centre Walk (Cost: 5 Eur)

Meeting point: there are two options for meeting, depending on your preferences.

Option A: meeting at 9:30 in front of the Hotel Ipanema Porto (Rua do Campo Alegre, 161, very close to the Math Department).

We will walk leisurely to the place where we meet our guide (see option B), having time to visit the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal park

Option B: meeting at 11:00 at Clérigos Tower, where we will start our walking tour.

Description
The walk takes us through the historic centre of Oporto. We start at the Clérigos (Clerics) tower, walk through the old Jewish quarter to a spot with excellent views next to Vitória church, down to the pedestrianised Rua das Flores (Flowers Street) where we stop for refreshments at the Mercearia das Flores (sells regional produce only –  do not ask for a Coca-Cola!). We then walk down the Rua das Flores, passing the Misericórdia (Mercy) church, on to the Bolsa (Stock Exchange), and then down towards the river Douro where we follow mediaeval streets leading to Ribeira (Riverside) square.
Degree of difficulty: Easy – Oporto is a very hilly city but this walk is all downhill.

The walk will be led by Michael Rothwell, a mathematics teacher and university tutor, who is British (from Manchester) and has lived in Oporto for 37 years. Although not a historian, he is fascinated by the architecture and history of his adopted city, and for several years has organised historical walks of Oporto based on various themes.
